Educate Yourself.

Welcome back to article #3 in the FHL Small Biz Sunday series! Thanks for taking the time to read these articles and I hope they’ve given you some value so far. This week's article is all about educating yourself, something I believe we all know to be important in our lives and our career, but it is sometimes hard to know where to start or what to educate yourself on.

For small business owners, athletes and anyone who wants to be successful in the financial and career sense, there are really four main areas you must be an expert on; goal-setting, mindset, financial literacy, and sales.

We discussed the importance of clarity of direction in the previous article and how being able to set crystal clear goals and workout everything you need to do to achieve them is the biggest step towards actually achieving them.

You must be an expert on mindset, understanding how your mind works with and against you and how to be in the best possible state for learning and performing, mindset is the foundation to growing and developing as a human being.

Financial literacy is a skill not taught in schools but is critical to any sort of wealth creation, if you can understand how to make your money make you more money, and what an asset really is, financial independence is a straightforward path.

And lastly sales, the oxygen of business - if you can’t sell enough products at a high enough profit margin, you will not be successful, it’s that simple. But even if you are not a small business owner, sales is not just about products and services, it is a set of skills that help you promote the value you bring to the people you want something from, whether it’s a position in a team, a sale of a car, or getting a promotion - adding value to people’s lives is the fundamental principle of achieving more and earning more, and that is what sales skills are about.

In the spirit of trying to add as much value as I can to your life, I have listed below my absolute favourite books to read, and people to follow and watch in all four of these areas.

These are the resources and the people I have found to be the most beneficial in my life, and believe will be the same for you. If nothing else, it gives you a solid place to start.

These resources are meant to help you get started on the path of educating yourself, and if you know exactly where you want to end up or where your greatest area for improvement lies, then it only takes one book, one person or one video to change your life.

Goal Setting:

  1. Maximum Achievement, Brian Tracy.

This is the ultimate book for setting goals, clarifying your ideal life in crystal clear detail, and then going on to achieve everything you set out to achieve. The tools in this book will help you set-up your life for massive success! There are no other books on this list because this is the only one you need to set crystal clear goals and learn the tools you need to achieve them!


1. Sell Like Crazy, Sabri Subry.

This book must be every small business owner’s go-to handbook for flooding your business with clients. Sabri details every step you need to use social media, email and your website to get more leads, and convert them to more happily paying customers than you have ever had.

2. Psychology of Selling, Brian Tracy.

If you like a no BS approach to sales, Brian Tracy is your man. He will teach you the tools and tactics necessary to outperform everyone in your industry. If selling is your game, Brian Tracy is your coach.

3. Crushing It, Gary Vaynerchuck

A playbook of how to dominate on every social media platform and produce content people will love! GaryVee is the social media guru, so it pays to listen when he gives away all his knowledge and tactics.

4. If You're Not First, You're Last, Grant Cardone.

In this book, Cardone teaches you not only how to sell, but how to expand during a contractionary period, just like the one we are facing now during COVID-19. This book could not come at a better time for business owners and people looking to get ahead.


1. Mindset, Carol Dweck.

The foundational book of mindset. Do you believe you are ‘stuck’ with what you were born with or do you know that you are malleable? That you can learn and develop and get better at whatever you work towards? If you haven’t read this book yet, you need to.

2. Atomic Habits, James Clear.

As the cover reads - “Tiny changes, remarkable results.” Learn how to make it easy to make the right choices and do the things you know you should be doing. Build routines that will make you more productive, healthier and happier. Whatever habit you want to implement in your life, this book shows you how to make it so easy you simply can’t not do it!

3. Can’t Hurt Me, David Goggins.

Considered to be the ‘Hardest man alive’ David Goggins’ story is insane, and his lessons are invaluable. Learn how to ‘callus’ your mind and push yourself further than you ever thought possible physically, mentally and emotionally.

Financial Literacy:

1. Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Robert Kiyosaki.

No matter how popular this book becomes or how many times you have heard about it, you must read this book if you want to achieve financial independence and create wealth for you and your family. This book will teach you what school did not - what an asset really means, and how to use your money to make more money. Once you understand the concepts in this book, you will know exactly where your money should be going out, so that even more comes back in. The only book you need to read to grow your wealth.

For small business owners, content creators, or anyone with a social media following, GaryVee is the man to follow for all things mindset, social media, marketing and business. He gives so much content away completely free, he is 100% worth following no matter who you are. I love his content because he just wants people to succeed and be happy. If you haven’t already, go follow this guy!

2. Grant Cardone @GrantCardone:

An absolute machine when it comes to business, sales and personal wealth creation. Another mogul who gives away so much content for free, all business owners, salespeople and people looking to create their own financial future need to follow him.

3. David Goggins @DavidGoggins:

If you need some motivation to get off the couch, you must follow Goggins. This man will not BS you, he will not comfort you, he will tell you to harden the F up and get to work. He is not what you’re thinking; some military bloke that screams at you to do something, no, he motivates the hell out of you by making you understand that you are not who or what your mind says you are, and that YOU are the one in complete control.
